illegal migrants

Illegal Burmese migrants in the larger cities of Thailand are estimated at around two million. The men predominantly work illegally in construction and fishing while women in housekeeping. Construction workers tend to dwell on the site of current projects, moving from place to place. Housekeepers live behind the kitchen of their employers with a wide range of living conditions. The fishing industry located in the harbor of Bangkok has an illegal system of dormitories.

The dormitories are located on land owned by Thai landlords. The landlords tend to build fish processing factories on their plots with dormitories where illegal migrant workers are extorted into renting rooms.

Sanitation is a large issue in the dormitory areas as waste and water infrastructures are underdeveloped.

Security is also an issue due to the rapid changeover of employees and the shifting working timetables.
